Shopify Variants vs Podifai Options
Use Shopify variants for the base SKU and stock, and Podifai options for personalization. Check the selected variant, preview, and order data.
Last updated: 2026-11-06
Use Shopify variants for choices that define the actual item being sold. Use Podifai options for the personalization applied to that item. Combining both systems correctly keeps the selected SKU, price, inventory, image, and customization data accurate through cart and checkout.
Quick Decision Guide
| Choice controls | Recommended setup |
|---|---|
| SKU or the actual item added to cart | Shopify variant |
| Base product price | Shopify variant |
| Variant inventory | Shopify variant |
| Product size or manufacturing color | Shopify variant |
| Variant product image | Shopify variant |
| Engraving or personalized text | Podifai option |
| Font, text color, or placement | Podifai option |
| Customer-uploaded artwork | Podifai option |
| Decorative graphics or add-ons | Podifai option |
| Add-on or component with its own stock | Podifai option linked to a Shopify variant (see below) |
Recommended Combined Setup
A common setup is to keep color and size as native Shopify variants, then add Podifai personalization on top. For example, Shopify can manage a red, blue, and black shirt in several sizes, while Podifai collects the shopper's monogram text, font, thread color, and uploaded logo.
- Shopify keeps the selected SKU, base price, and inventory accurate.
- Podifai saves the personalization as line item properties with the order.
- Variant image can keep Live Preview on the shopper's selected product color.
Use Variant image as the Live Preview Background
In the editor, open the Background dropdown for the view. See Change the Preview Background Image for all background choices. Choose Variant image when the background should follow the Shopify variant selected by the shopper. Create the variants and assign their images in Shopify first, then position the Podifai Live Preview layers on top.
Wrong Shopify Variant Added to Cart
Shopify Picker Shows Blue, but the Cart Shows Red
If you already use Shopify variants and the native picker shows the intended choice, start with the mismatch between the selected variant and the variant submitted to the cart. You do not need to create Shopify variants again or rebuild personalization options to begin this investigation.
- Record the expected variant name or SKU and the variant actually shown in the cart.
- Record the selection and Add to Cart steps on the affected product page.
- Send support the product URL, theme name, and whether other apps change the variant picker or cart.
Podifai does not change the Shopify variant ID. Before contacting support, try these checks:
- Turn off other apps that change the variant picker, bundles, or the cart, then test again.
- Test the product in an unmodified copy of your theme.
- Check whether a second variant picker or a duplicate Podifai option controls the same choice.
A Live Preview background change does not affect which SKU reaches the cart.
The Choice Exists Only as a Podifai Option
Use this setup when the product-defining choice exists only as a Podifai option. A Podifai color, badge, dropdown, or swatch value is stored as customization information and does not automatically replace the base Shopify variant ID submitted by the product form.
- Create or keep the SKU-bearing color and size choices as Shopify variants.
- Assign the correct image, price, SKU, and inventory to each Shopify variant.
- Check whether a Podifai option duplicates the same product-defining choice before removing it. Preserve any separate personalization it controls.
- Keep engraving, uploads, fonts, graphics, and similar personalization in Podifai.
- Choose Variant image as the Live Preview background when the preview should follow the selected variant.
- Test the selected variant in cart and checkout.
If the selection method is unknown, identify which picker was used. A color name in cart properties alone does not establish which base variant was selected.
Linking Podifai Options to Shopify Variants
Podifai can also link option values to Shopify variants for inventory tracking or variant-based add-on pricing. This is useful for components or add-ons, but it is different from selecting the base product variant submitted by the Shopify product form.
Check the Base Item and Add-ons in the Order
First confirm the base Shopify variant's identity, SKU, and quantity. Then review personalization properties, add-on charges, and any separate component lines. A component inventory link and a paid variant link serve different purposes; see Linked Inventory & Add-on Pricing for the configuration choices and stock checks.
FAQ
Why does the cart still contain the first Shopify variant?
If the Shopify variant picker already shows the intended variant but the cart contains another one, record the selection and cart result and use the chat icon on the left side of the page or email chelsea@podifai.com with the product URL and theme name. This needs investigation of the selected versus submitted variant. Creating Shopify variants again is not the next step. If the choice exists only as a Podifai option, use the setup in the section “The Choice Exists Only as a Podifai Option” on this page.
Can Live Preview follow the selected Shopify variant image?
Yes. Choose Variant image as the Live Preview background. Podifai then uses the image assigned to the shopper's currently selected Shopify variant.
Should product color be a Shopify variant or a Podifai option?
Use a Shopify variant when color must control SKU, price, inventory, checkout, or the variant image. Use a Podifai option when color is only personalization data, such as engraving text color or a decorative layer.
