Direct answer

How does inventory work for Shopify product options?

Inventory for Shopify product options tracks the availability of selectable components such as charms, materials, accessories, or other fixed option values. Open-ended customer inputs such as names, messages, and uploaded images do not need their own stock records.

Podifai can link a supported option value to an existing Shopify variant so the value follows that variant's available quantity and SKU. Merchants can also use Podifai custom inventory when a component does not need to be modeled as a Shopify variant.

When stock reaches zero, the configured storefront behavior can prevent a shopper from selecting the unavailable value. Pricing and inventory can stay independent, or both can reference the same linked variant when price and stock come from the same Shopify item.

Implementation workflow

Link stock without rebuilding the whole product model

Use Shopify variants for genuine stock units and Podifai options for the choices layered on top of the base product.

  1. 01

    Identify stock-bearing choices

Separate physical components such as charms, materials, and accessories from open-ended personalization fields.

  2. 02

    Choose an inventory mode

Leave the value untracked, use Podifai custom inventory, or link it to an existing Shopify variant.

  3. 03

    Set sold-out behavior

Decide how an unavailable value should appear and verify that the shopper cannot submit an invalid selection.

  4. 04

    Test order deductions

Place test orders with single- and multi-select values and confirm quantity, price, SKU, and fulfillment data.

Merchant use cases

Track the components inside a personalized product

Inventory linking is most valuable when several sellable parts come together in one custom configuration.

Charms and pendants

Track each selected symbol, initial, stone, spacer, or pendant separately.

Materials and finishes

Follow stock for physical blanks, premium materials, colors, or hardware.

Accessories and add-ons

Track gift boxes, straps, tags, replacement parts, and other optional items.

Build-your-own products

Deduct several selected components from one shopper-created bundle.

Scope boundary: Inventory is intended for merchant-defined option values. Text Input, Text Area, and Image Upload collect unique customer content and do not use per-value stock tracking.
